The so-called 'race that stops a nation' is the jewel in Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival crown — just as it has been since Archer won the first of his two successive Melbourne Cups back in 1861.
This year's 3,200-metre race sees a 23-strong field of thoroughbreds hoping to be first past the post. And leading the way is six-year-old Gold Trip who took the top prize last year. On the saddle is New Zealander James McDonald, who himself rode Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant two years ago.
Gold Trip's 2022 rider Mark Zahra is also among the favorites this year, having already ridden Without A Fight to Caulfield Cup success just a couple of weeks ago. But it's looking likely that Willie Mullins-trained Vauban (ridden by the experienced Ryan Moore) will leave the starting gate as bookies' favorite on Tuesday after his dominant victory at Royal Ascot earlier in the year.
Other things to watch at the Flemington Racecourse will be 51-year-old and three-time former winner Damien Oliver's final Melbourne Cup appearance — he rides Alenquer. And in Rachel King on Military Mission and Hollie Doyle on Future History there's an outside chance we'll see the first female jockey to win since Michelle Payne broke new ground on Prince of Penzance eight years ago.

The annual Melbourne Cup takes place on Tuesday, November 7 in Melbourne, Australia at the Flemington Racecourse as 24 jockeys commence battle on the 3,200-meter course. That's 11 pm ET on Monday, November 6 for punters in the US.
Known as ‘the race that stops the nation’ as virtually the whole of Australia comes to a halt to watch the action, the likes of Willie Mullins, Joseph O’Brien and Kohei Matsuyama will all be vying for victory in Melbourne.
The climax of the weeks-long Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Melbourne Cup is one of 32 race meetings taking place throughout Australia on Tuesday on what is a public holiday in the city of Melbourne. However, it is the two-mile handicap at Flemington that will undoubtedly draw the most interest both nationally and internationally.
Last year saw jockey Mark Zahra triumph on Gold Trip while this time around it is Vauban who is the firm favorite. Ridden by Britain’s Ryan Moore, the five-year-old triumphed earlier this year at Royal Ascot and has won his last two starts convincingly.
Gold Trip will be back to defend its crown after an impressive victory in 2022, but will be facing tough competition from both Australian and overseas gallopers for the 3200m journey.
Alenquer presented with a stone bruise after trackwork on Sunday and had a hoof pad applied by veterinarians. His status remained under a heavy cloud however there was a late boost as the horse passed a vet examination on Tuesday morning.
They call it the race that stops the nation, but with Willie Mullins-trained Vauban and Absurde shaping up as the favourites, the 2023 Melbourne Cup may instead be in thrall to a single stable.
An erstwhile premier hurdler, Vauban made the switch to flats and promptly won the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Ballyroan Stakes at Naas this year, and will be ridden by 2014 champion Ryan Moore in the $8 million, 3,200m handicap.
While Absurde hasn't quite had the same success as his stablemate, his victory in the Ebor Handicap has set expectations high, and you won't find a hungrier jockey at Flemington Racecourse than the Aussie Zac Purton, who's still on the hunt for his first Melbourne Cup triumph.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is Damien Oliver, a three-time winner of this race with plans to retire after it. However, his bid to match the record jointly held by four-time Melbourne Cup winners Harry White and Bobbie Lewis may not even get the chance to materialise, with Alenquer nursing a stone bruise.
